Our Mission

Our mission at Norcal Freedom for Paws is to provide emergency funds for short term boarding, transport and medical care to various animal rescue organizations to rescue as many animals as possible from shelters anywhere before they are needlessly euthanized. These funds will buy time for these wonderful animals to be hosted and placed by rescue organizations in their forever homes.

In early 2016 Susan Leu learned through social media of a dog at the Stanislaus County shelter that was to be euthanized within 24 hours if not rescued by an organization. She immediately offered to pay for an additional two weeks of boarding at the shelter to buy time for a rescue to step up. It worked! At the eleventh hour, a rescue had agreed to pull this dog; Conner, the first dog to be saved, found his forever home with Susan Leu. The extended boarding worked but Susan did not anticipate that within hours more and more dogs needed rescuing. Dog loving friends stepped up with donations. Within a few weeks, over ten dogs were saved this way. Rescue organizations generally need more time to arrange transport and secure fosters than the shelters can offer. It became clear when the shelter volunteers kept reaching out that there is a real need for this important resource to provide funds for boarding, transport and often medical care. Norcal Freedom for Paws teams up with people who love animals and who want to make a real difference in the lives of these animals who will otherwise be unnecessarily euthanized.
